If you’re just starting your sewing journey (or refreshing your toolkit after a little creative break), today’s post is for you. Sewing can feel a little overwhelming with all the fancy gadgets out there, but honestly? You only need a few essentials to get started.
Lola Glenn only endorses products that we love. If you end up making a purchase through one of our links, Lola Glenn may earn a commission. If something is no longer available, sorry about that! It was available on the date it was published.

1. Scissors
Super sharp scissors just for fabric. They’ll glide through cotton, silk, linen without snagging or fraying.
Tip:
Never use your fabric scissors on paper. It’ll dull them very quickly and might ruin them.

2. Measuring Tape
A soft, flexible tape that’s perfect for measuring curves, hems, and body measurements.
Tip:
Look for one that’s double-sided (inches + centimeters) for extra versatility. Bonus tip is keep it rolled up in a little pouch so it doesn’t get creased!

3. Pins ( and a Pincushion )
Straight pins hold fabric layers together before you sew. A pincushion keeps them all organized (and keeps you from finding pins with your foot… trust me).
Tip:
Glass-head pins are the best you can get. You can iron over them without melting anything and they leave small holes in the fabric so they go unnoticed.

4. Thread
One of the basics! You don’t need a lot, focusing on the two basic colors, white and black, will cover a majority of projects.
Tip:
When in doubt, match the thread to the project. Working with a pattern and not sure what color to choose? Try to get thread that matches the dominant color, it’ll look more intentional and clean.

5. Sewing Needles
Essential for hand sewing! Different needles work best for different fabrics (like sharps for regular cotton and ballpoint needles for knits).
Tip:
Start with a mixed-size pack, that way you’ll always have the right needle for whatever project pops up.

6. Buttons
Little fasteners that add both function and flair to your garments. From tiny shirt buttons to bold statement ones, they can totally change a look.
Tip:
Keep a small stash of basic buttons (white, black, navy, tan) on hand. They’re lifesavers for quick fixes for a button-down shirt and pants, this tutorial explains more. They also come in handy for DIY upgrades.

7. Ironing Board, Iron + Pressing cloth
An ironing board, iron and pressing cloth is the perfect trio for anyone who sews as a beginner or a professional.
Tip:
Pressing cloths don’t need to be expensive. A small piece of plain white cotton will work just fine. The purpose of the cloth is to create a layer between what you’re ironing and the iron.
